Martin’s primary responsibility is as Member of Parliament for Cheltenham. He stands up for Cheltenham on issues that affect local people, asks parliamentary questions of government and lobbies a wide range of organisations on behalf of Cheltenham, from Network Rail to the Environment Agency. He also takes up thousands of individual cases for constituents living in Cheltenham on everything from NHS treatment to energy bills to tax and benefits.
- In the last parliament Martin was shadow environment minister for the Liberal Democrat party. In this role he questions ministers on legislation and policy announcements and puts his party’s position in debates on a wide range of environmental issues from flooding to climate change to animal welfare. He has contributed to his party’s policymaking process on both climate change and the natural environment.
- Martin was also a member of the influential Environmental Audit Committee (EAC), one of the House of Commons select committees that launch inquiries into how government is actually working and interrogate ministers, officials and expert witnesses. The EAC can examine the environmental impact of any government policy – for instance its Regional Spatial Strategies or plans to build new coal-fired power stations.
- Martin was secretary of the associate parliamentary group for corporate responsibility which encourages companies to improve their social, ethical and environmental performance.
- Martin is the founder and chair of the all-party parliamentary group for tribal peoples, which works with the charity Survival International to support the rights of threatened tribal peoples around the world.
