- Martin’s primary responsibility is as Member of Parliament for Cheltenham. He stands up for Cheltenham on issues that affect local people, asks parliamentary questions of government and lobbies a wide range of organisations on behalf of Cheltenham, from Network Rail to the Environment Agency. He also takes up thousands of individual cases for constituents living in Cheltenham on everything from NHS treatment to energy bills to tax and benefits.
- Martin is chair of the Liberal Democrat parliamentary committee on international affairs. In this role he keeps in close touch with coalition ministers in the Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the Department for International Development and puts the Liberal Democrat party’s position in debates on a wide range of international issues. As shadow environment minister in the last parliament, Martin contributed to his party’s policymaking process on both climate change and the natural environment, areas about which he still cares deeply.
- Martin is an officer of a number of all-party parliamentary groups including the all-party group for the environment and development and the all-party group for responsible investment, which encourages companies to improve their social, ethical and environmental performance. He also holds official positions in all-party groups promoting employee ownership and education.
- Martin is the founder and chair of the all-party parliamentary group for tribal peoples, which works with the charity Survival International to support the rights of threatened tribal peoples around the world. Only recently Martin worked closely with Survival to stop British-registered mining company Vedanta from destroying land sacred to the Dongria Kondh tribe in Orissa, India (dubbed the ‘real Avatar tribe’).
