Apprenticeships are one of the coalition government's real success stories, claims local Lib Dem MP Martin Horwood.
'We've had 2,610 apprenticeship starts in Cheltenham since the coalition began' said Cheltenham's Member of Parliament Martin Horwood 'a much faster rate than under Labour.'
He praised local firms like electrical contractor CF Roberts, Kohler Mira and DIS who put real emphasis on apprenticeships as well as training providers like Gloucestershire College.
Lib Dem business secretary Vince Cable was so impressed by CF Roberts, he wants to make them a national case study. The Cheltenham company creates dozens of apprenticeships every year, managing director Ian Henderson is a former apprentice and so is deputy MD Paul Roberts, grandson of the company's founder.
The firm went to Martin for help when possible government changes threatened the smooth running of their apprentice programme. “It is the MP's job to support local business”, says Martin.
